Fumbling with hot tinfoil as I unwrap a steaming green chile and bacon breakfast burrito from my favorite spot in Santa Fe, while driving up to Taos, is one of my favorite memories from living in New Mexico. Back then, grabbing a breakfast burrito on the way to the ski area with my husband was our weekend routine. And we took it seriously. From fast food joints to hole-in-the-wall gems, we did the research sampling burrito after burrito in search of that perfect combo of crispy hash browns, fluffy eggs, spicy green or red chile (or both Christmas style, of course), all snuggly wrapped in foil to keep it warm on the drive to the mountain.
Since moving to Salt Lake City, the quest began again. For the past three years, we’ve been on a mission to find the ultimate breakfast burrito or grab-and-go pastry to fuel long days of charging hard in the Wasatch. Because we understand that a solid breakfast isn’t just tasty, it can be the difference between bonking at 11 a.m. or skiing straight through to après. If you're looking for more info on exactly how to fuel for your day on the hill, head over to my interview with Lucy Mower, RD here to get all the knowledge you need!
Whether you're heading up Big or Little Cottonwood Canyon, or making your way to Park City, here’s a list of the best spots in Salt Lake City to grab breakfast fast and head up the mountain.
Best Breakfast Burritos in Salt Lake City
Beaumont Bakery & Café
Location: 3979 S Wasatch Blvd, Millcreek
Conveniently located directly off Wasatch Boulevard with a drive-through or walk-in option, Beaumont is a local gem where you can grab a breakfast burrito, flaky pastry, and a latte in one stop. Their breakfast burrito is loaded with eggs, bacon or sausage, cheddar, potatoes, and roasted poblano aioli, wrapped in a fresh tortilla. Grab one of their pistachio croissants for a little pocket snack to make sure you’re fueled for your entire day on the hill.
Emiliano’s Taco Shop
Location: 2646 S 700 E, Salt Lake City
When I’m feeling like stepping back into the tastes of quality New Mexican food, Emiliano’s is my first stop. You can build your own combo of eggs, cheese, meats, and hash browns and add whatever salsa you like. Turnaround time is quick, and the location is prime for anyone traversing 700 East to get onto I-80 to access any of the resorts.
Dog Haus
Location: 10261 S State St Ste F, Sandy
Ooey, gooey, cheesy breakfast burritos galore with more options than any of the other breakfast burrito stops. Dog Haus is located in the shopping complex closest to the entrance of Big Cottonwood Canyon, making it a great pit stop for anyone going up to either of the Cottonwoods!
Beto’s Mexican Food
Multiple Locations: Found all over SLC, and some are open 24/7
Beto’s brings that classic SoCal burrito stand vibe to Salt Lake City. With various meats and sauces to choose from, hefty portions and multiple locations, it’s a top-ranking classic among burrito connoisseurs. If you eat meat, try their bacon burrito at some point; the crisp is always just right.
Gourmandise The Bakery
Location: 250 S 300 E, Salt Lake City
While known more for Euro-style pastries, I was honestly surprised at how refined the flavor palate was in the Gourmandise breakfast burrito. The shakshuka sauce brings the perfect amount of spice, combined with fresh eggs and avocado, making this a can’t-miss option.
Grab-and-Go Pastries
If burritos aren’t your jam, these quick stops offer flaky, buttery, and energizing options to go with your coffee before heading up to the mountain:
Tulie Bakery
Location: 863 E 700 S, Salt Lake City
Tuile is a local's favorite for rotating pastries and high-end coffees to go. With a variety of sweet and savory pastries always fresh, you can’t go wrong. Each pastry is made day-of, and when it’s sold out, it’s gone for the day, so make sure to make this the first stop on your way up to the mountains, as you don’t want to miss out on your favorites. Pro tip: grab a bag of cookies to put in your pocket and share with your friends on the lift - I promise you’ll be the most popular person on the hill.
Alpha Coffee
Location: Big Cottonwood Canyon Location - 7260 Racquet Club Dr, Cottonwood Heights
Out of all of the options listed here, Alpha Coffee has the best location for both Big and Little Cottonwood Canyon access. Ample parking, tasty pastries, and unique lattes make this a pit stop for Utah’s most dedicated skiers and snowboarders. Bonus: the spacious café is remote-work friendly, making it a prime spot to knock out a few emails before heading up for some lunch laps.
The Beanyard
Location: 883 E 9400 S, Sandy, UT
The Bean Yard is a local coffee roaster that is located in Sandy, Utah serving high quality coffee and delicious toasts and pastries to-go. This is the perfect stop before grabbing the Ski Bus from the Sandy station!
Beaucoup Bakery
Location: 3939 Wasatch Blvd, Salt Lake City
An offshoot of the popular Beaumont Bakery - Beaucoup bakery is also located in the Olympus Hills Shopping Center and offers a very quick grab-and-go bakery option for those in a rush out the door. Options here are more catered to sweeter palates or fresh-baked loaves of bread, which make a perfect tailgait apres ski companion. Check out this new location and let us know what you think!
There’s something undeniably nostalgic about that first bite of breakfast on your way up to the mountain to ski, whether it’s wrapped in foil or flaked with buttery pastry layers. Salt Lake City has a ton of great options to keep the tradition alive. Happy devouring, and happy skiing!
